Episode Title: Traditional Job Reqs Are Out
AI is changing the world of work, even as employers are making a fundamental shift toward skills-based hiring. Here’s why, next on The Perna Syndicate.
Ep 768 show:
This is The Perna Syndicate—I’m glad you’re here! Today, the idea that you absolutely MUST have a college degree to have a shot at a successful career is being challenged in a positive way.
Formalizing education was one of the ways we tried to ‘level the playing field’ in society. And to be fair, it has done that to a great degree. But equally true is that it also created unintended consequences we are now dealing with.
The education one receives in college not only drives skills, but also broadens thinking. However, the dramatic rise in the cost of college has increased student loan debt to staggering proportions. Now, many young people are looking at alternative training pathways that may offer a better return on their investment.
There are a growing number of online programs to help people learn new skills at their own pace. Among business executives, we are seeing a growing belief that there are now many on-ramps and pathways to success—especially given that the labor force is aging, participation rates are staying down, and job openings remain outsized.
Across industries, there is absolutely a re-evaluation underway for jobs that shouldn’t require a 4-year degree. Businesses have to get creative to meet the needs of their customers. Rethinking job requirements is just one step closer to getting there.
Tomorrow on the show: The path that will lead you to your personal goals isn’t always the one set out for you. See you next time on The Perna Syndicate!
