This is The Perna Syndicate—hello and welcome! If you’re a high school student anywhere in the world, this whole week on the show has been an open letter to you. If I had the privilege of talking to you face to face, this is what I’d say. 

I have found that it can be way too easy to spend all our precious time living someone else’s dream. Here’s what I mean: every time we watch a movie, play a videogame, or go to a sporting event, we’re building the dreams of the people involved in creating those experiences. 

Now, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that—but are you making enough time in your life to build and live your own dream?

I know it’s easy to get caught up in all the great entertainment options out there today. I enjoy many of them myself in my free time. Just make sure these things don’t become your life. Carve out the time you need to invest in yourself, think about your future, and build your own dreams. 

This is your life, your journey, and only you can determine where you want to go. Don’t choose a career because it’s what everyone else wants for you or because it just sounds impressive. Don’t fill your time only with other people’s dreams. 

And don’t believe the myths that tell you college is your only option. Do what you love and love what you do. Go after those hands-on experiences. Study up and be smart. Envision what you want your lifestyle to look like and then pursue that dream with everything you’ve got. I know you’ll make it awesome!
