3 - Why Is Everything
Episode: 3
File Name: 3-why-is-everything
Tease: Everyone knows that the Millennials and Gen Z are lazy and entitled—or, are they? On this episode, let’s examine popular opinion with a new perspective on today’s young people.
Ep 3 show:
Today’s younger generations get a lot of bad press. In general, Millennials and Generation Z (or the Why Generation, as I call them) are painted as entitled, self-focused, unmotivated, and all-around disappointing. This unflattering image has reached into the realm of employment, where managers bemoan the lackluster performance of what is now the largest generational cohort in the American workforce.
But what if the stereotypes are nothing more than a self-fulfilling prophecy?
I CEO my own company and, speaking as a Baby Boomer, I can confidently tell you that my Millennial employees are among the company’s most valuable assets. They’re innovative, they’re naturally conversant in technological solutions, and they’re always eager to upgrade their skills.
What makes them different from all the other Millennials out there? Nothing, because this entire generation can perform at a higher level—when they have a reason why.
The why is everything to this generation. When they ask why, they’re usually not being smart alecks…they want to know so they can rethink, innovate, and improve the process and outcome for everyone. They want to make things better.
That’s my team, and that’s why it’s a privilege to work alongside Millennials. When you get past the stereotypes and unleash what they’re really capable of, they’ll perform beyond expectations.
