Episode Title: 2 Takes on Mental Health

Mental health has become a big issue, especially with the advent of remote work. Here’s how it can hurt Gen Z, next on The Perna Syndicate.

Ep 798 show:

You’re now in The Perna Syndicate—let’s get going! What’s your view on mental health in the workplace? Chances are, your answer could depend on what generation you’re from.

Recent research on the disconnect between Gen Z workers and their older bosses found that they tend to hold divergent views on the impact of work on mental health.

One of the biggest challenges for Gen Z workers is the reality that work can become an all-consuming experience. This is especially true when they operate in a remote or hybrid work environment, where the lines between work and life are often blurred.

According to the study, less than 50% of Gen Z workers agree that their boss helps them maintain a schedule that supports their mental health. At the same time, 60% of bosses say they try to improve their employees’ wellbeing by helping them maintain a healthy schedule. Clearly, we are not connecting here.

I give all the kudos to the bosses who are trying to support their team’s mental health. In our demanding workplace, that can be tough. I would just encourage all of us to look more closely at the kind of workplace boundaries that can truly make a positive impact.

Tomorrow: Another disconnect between the older and younger generations at work is how we view time off. We’ll cover that and more next time on The Perna Syndicate for that conversation. See you then!
