Episode Title: Build Skills, Build Retention

How do you stay in demand if the labor market shifts? It’s all about skill development and younger workers know it. Here’s why, next on The Perna Syndicate.

Ep 697 show:

Hello and welcome to The Perna Syndicate! Yesterday we talked about how younger-gen workers are continuing to change jobs in search of the right fit, even with an economic downturn looming ahead.

It’s very likely these workers will remain in demand even as market conditions shift. Many younger workers possess skills like computer science and digital marketing that are highly valued in the labor market. Of course, this is part of the reason that it’s fairly easy for them to job-shop.

I’m a firm believer that regardless of what happens with the economy, those employees who develop the right skills will always be in demand. This is especially true as older employees continue to age out of the labor market.

The question then becomes how employers can put programs in place to keep their top talent. Part of the answer is to help these high-potential employees build more skills.

The recent Amazon survey showed us that the younger generations place huge value on working for employers who will invest in developing their talents. So, a first step is to create individualized development plans where employees can direct their own learning.

They’ll invest in the company if the company will invest in them. It’s as simple as that.

Tomorrow: Younger workers are ambitious to grow their skills, but does that mean they all want to take on leadership roles? We’ll cover that and more next time on The Perna Syndicate…see you then!
