Episode Title: Rethinking what Productivity Looks Like

What does productivity look like in a world that’s half remote, half in person? We’re going to have to rethink it, coming up next on The Perna Syndicate.

Ep 393 show:

You’re now in The Perna Syndicate—hello and welcome! How can employers shatter the Zoom Ceiling that may be preventing remote workers from advancing in their careers? Many people working from home are worried that they’re being passed over for promotions—and their fears, according to Dr. Elora Voyles, are not unfounded.

That’s why companies that pivoted to remote and hybrid work now need to pivot their mindset about what productivity actually looks like. If they don’t, they’ll risk alienating and losing remote talent. And that’s something no company can afford in today’s labor market.

One of the first things to change is how the organization measures success. Instead of defaulting to a time-based model, where productivity is measured in the hours worked, instead we need to embrace what’s called a Results Oriented Work Environment.

In this model, it’s less about the hours worked than it is the results that are produced. This can be very challenging for managers to embrace, because it means handing over a significant amount of autonomy to the workforce. If trust is not a cornerstone of your culture, this will be a lot harder.

One thing is clear: we need to rethink what productivity looks like. Because in the brave new world of remote and hybrid work, it looks much different from the office-centered standards of the past.

On the next episode of The Perna Syndicate, why are some demographics choosing remote work more than others? Let’s talk about it on the next episode of The Perna Syndicate. See you then!
