This is The Perna Syndicate—welcome to today’s show! This week, we’ve been talking about the 3 critical steps you must take in order to change something. They are, in order: focus, plan, and take action. I discovered these steps as a kid, climbing high in a tree, when all the sudden the branch beneath me started to give way. In my split-second reaction of utter terror, I focused, planned, and took action—massive action—so that I wouldn’t fall. 


Thankfully, I did make it to safety without the branch completely breaking under me, but I won’t lie—it was close. I’ve never forgotten that terrifying moment, or what I learned that day. 


The urgency of the problem got my complete attention. That was the focus step. I immediately started assessing my options to escape the danger; that was the step of planning. And then, in the final step, I took action to carry out my plan. 


Taking action is an essential part of making change happen. We can give a problem our attention and make plans to fix it all day long, and both these steps are critical. But unless we put those plans into motion by taking action, nothing is going to change. 


Action is where the rubber meets the road. Yes, once you take action, you’ve made a commitment in that direction. But you can’t stand still on a creaking branch forever. Focus, plan, and take action: these are the 3 steps that can create positive change at home, at school, and at work.
